RedHawks, Broncos Battle to 3-3 Tie

OXFORD, Ohio — Miami offense was the first on the board to start the game off, but Western Michigan found crucial times to score and respond, as the Broncos and RedHawks tied, 3-3, after regulation and a five-minute three-on-three overtime. After two rounds in the shootout, the Broncos earned the extra point to lift them over Miami in the NCHC standings.

The home tie was the second tie for Miami this season. Miami fell to 4-8-2-0-1-0 on the season, while Western Michigan improved to 3-8-3-0-0-1. Sophomore defenseman Alec Capstick earned his first goal on the 2020-21 season with his third-period tally, and freshman goaltender Ludvig Persson recorded 31 saves in the close contest. Monte Graham and Ryan Savage also scored Miami goals, with the pair each scoring their second on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 16:03 2nd (Miami 1-0) | Ben Lown kept the puck in at the blue line in the offensive zone and took a shot on the net. Chase Pletzke deflected the shot in front, and Monte Graham picked up the rebound with a quick one-time shot that landed in the top of the net to open up the scoring.

  • 00:37 3rd (Miami 2-0) | Joe Cassetti forced a turnover in the Miami end and tried to dump it off his backhand deep in the neutral zone. Ryan Savage picked up the puck, took off for a breakaway, and ripped a hard wrist shot past Aslanidis.

  • 07:59 3rd (WMU 2-1) | Michael Joyaux had the puck at the blueline with time, passing it over to Drew Worrad at the top of the right circle. Worrad gave the puck to Ty Glover, who was at the side of the net. Glover spun around and took a shot that went past Persson for a power-play goal.

  • 09:48 3rd (Miami 3-1) | Matt Barry had the puck behind the net and gave it to Alec Capstick, who was waiting in front to score. Capstick's goal, Miami's third of the game, was his first in the 2020-21 season. Savage was credited with the secondary assist for his second point on the night.

  • 10:01 3rd (WMU 3-2) | Brett Van Os picked the puck up on the boards and poked it over to Glover at the goal line. Glover found Jamie Rome for a one-timer, who shot the puck five-hole and slowly crossed the goal line.

  • 12:31 3rd (WMU 3-3) | Jason Polin deflected the puck in the Miami end as they tried to clear it, as it bounced to Van Os, who kept it in at the blueline open. Van Os kept skated over to the right side and passed it over to Ronnie Attard near the boards, and slapped a wrister in from the blue line leaking through the pads of Persson.
