ON TAP: Miami travels to Akron on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tilt versus the Zips.
LAST TIME OUT: Peyton Scott had 19 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double but the RedHawks fell 72-63 on Wednesday to the Ohio Bobcats. The RedHawks trailed by as many as 20 points in the second half, but cut OU's lead to seven with 50 seconds to go but could get no closer.
ABOUT AKRON: Akron is 3-4 on the year and 0-4 in MAC play. Offensively, they are led by Jordyn Dawson, who averages 17.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest. The Zips enjoy shooting the triple as well, connecting on 7.9 per game.
SERIES WITH AKRON: Miami is 39-18 all-time versus the Zips, but Akron won both contests a year ago. Prior to that, Miami had won six straight in the series.
DYNAMIC DUO: The backcourt duo of sophomore
Peyton Scott and freshman
Katie Davidson are averaging a combined 33.6 points, 12.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game. The two players combined are averaging 71 minutes per contest as well. Scott and Davidson have each scored in double figures in every game this year.
BENCH PRESS: In Miami's first six contests of the year they managed just 51 total bench points (8.5/game). In its last two games the RedHawks have combined for 29 points (14.5/game) off the bench. Much of that credit goes to
Jada Duckett, who has 16 points off the bench in the past two games.
FAMILIAR FACE: The two head coaches in Saturday's contest were teammates at Richmond during the 2003-04 season. The Spiders were 23-10 and advanced to the WNIT that season.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: While Miami's 1-7 record is not ideal, when looking at its competition, the record makes a bit more sense. This season Miami's eight opponents have a combined record of 43-18: Notre Dame (5-4), Valparaiso (4-3), Ohio State (5-0), Central Michigan (6-2), Evansville (4-3), Bowling Green (8-1), Buffalo (7-2) and Ohio (4-3).
GREAT SCOTT: Peyton Scott had a banner year for the RedHawks in 2019-20, averaging 12.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, earning All-MAC Freshman honors, but that is nothing compared to what she is doing in 2020-21. The sophomore is averaging 17.8 points and 5.9 rebounds this season. Playing much of this season as the team's point guard, Scott is also averaging 4.6 assists per game after averaging just 2.2 a year ago. She ranks 14th in the MAC in scoring, 22nd in rebounding, second in assists, 14th in steals (1.5), sixth in free throw percentage (88.5%) and fifth in minutes played (35.6).
FRESHMAN PHENOM: Katie Davidson has made a quick impression on the basketball team. The freshman has scored in double figures in every game of her career and is averaging 15.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Â Her scoring average ranks 14th in the MAC and is second-best (12th nationally) in the conference among freshmen, trailing only BGSU's Lexi Fleming (19.1). She also has a chance to become one of Miami's best freshman in school history, despite the shortened season. Davidson is currently on pace to score 376 points, which would be the fifth-most points in Miami history for a freshmen, trailing only
Lauren Dickerson (520), Courtney Osborn (513), Kim Lancaster (432) and Amanda Jackson (391).Â
SUPER SENIOR: Kelly McLaughlin scored 188 points and had 125 rebounds in her first three years with the RedHawks, averaging 4.1 points and 2.7 rebounds. This year, the senior has already scored 91 points and recorded 73 rebounds in eight games for an average of 11.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. She even made her first career three pointer versus Bowling Green.
POUND THE BOARDS: Despite its incredibly tough schedule, Miami leads the MAC in rebounding margin at +9.9 per game, but what they are doing on the offensive glass is even better. Miami has at least 10 offensive rebounds in every contest this season and over its last three MAC games Miami has 50 offensive boards. Miami ranks 21st in the country with 16.5 offensive rebounds per game.
