ON TAP: Miami hits the road for its second straight game, this time with a trip to Northern Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 30. The contest is slated to begin at 2Â p.m.
ABOUT NORTHERN ILLINOIS: The Huskies are 7-6 overall and 5-3 in MAC play. NIU has played just once since Jan. 21, which includes a 76-63 win over Akron on Jan. 27. Chelby Koker leads the team at 20.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Northern Illinois enjoys the deep threat, connecting on 10.0 triples per contest, and has four players shooting better than 40 percent from behind the arc.
ROUND TWO WITH NIU: Peyton Scott's career day was not enough for Miami back on Jan. 16 versus the Huskies, as they fell 87-79. While playing all 40 minutes, Scott finished with a career-high 34 points, while adding eight rebounds, seven assists and eight steals.
Katie Davidson added 14 points and three triples in the contest.
SERIES WITH NIU: NIU leads the series 22-21 all time. The two teams split a pair of contests last year. NIU won 86-84 in overtime in DeKalb and Miami captured a 66-64 victory at home a year ago. Miami's last win in DeKalb was on Jan. 31, 2018, a 77-62 victory.
DO IT ALL: Over her past four games,
Peyton Scott has done everything for the women's basketball team. She has played all 160 minutes, while recording 22.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game.Â
CHASING HISTORY: There has only been one triple-double in Miami history, Linda Mallender in 1984 (10 pts., 12 rebs., 10 assists.), but
Peyton Scott continues to threaten that record nearly every game. On Wednesday, Scott had 19 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds versus Ball State. Earlier this month she even nearly had a quadruple double, posting 34 points, eight rebounds, eight steals and seven assists. In all, Scott has had four different games with at least 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists this year.
NO RESERVES: Miami has played much of the season with an extremely thin roster, competing much of the year with a max of 10 players due to, opt outs and injuries. In 14 games this season Miami has used eight different starting lineups and just
Peyton Scott and
Katie Davidson have started all 14 contests.
LAST TIME OUT: After falling behind 22-4 just seven minutes into the contest, the Miami University women's basketball team nearly erased the 18-point deficit, but came up just short in an 85-82 defeat at Ball State on Wednesday evening. In the loss, sophomore
Peyton Scott had a near triple-double with 19 points, 13 assists (career-high) and eight rebounds, while senior
Kelly McLaughlin (14), senior
Kenzie Schmitz (14) and senior
Abbey Hoff (11) also scored in double figures.
BENCH PRESS: This season Miami has averaged right around 12 bench points per game. Versus Ball State, Miami had a season high 30 points off the bench, led by a career-high 14 from senior
Kenzie Schmitz (also made a career-high four three pointers). Freshman
Taylor Boruff chipped in with a career-high six points as well.
GREAT SCOTT: Peyton Scott had a banner year for the RedHawks in 2019-20, averaging 12.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, earning All-MAC Freshman honors, but that is nothing compared to what she is doing in 2020-21. The sophomore is averaging 19.2 points and 6.7 rebounds this season. Playing much of this season as the team's point guard, Scott is also averaging 5.4 assists per game after averaging just 2.2 a year ago. She ranks eighth in the MAC in scoring (19.2), 10th in rebounding (6.7), second in assists (5.4), seventh in steals (2.4), 10th in field goal percentage (39.7%) and seventh in free throw percentage (83.9%).
LEAVING IT ALL ON THE FLOOR: Peyton Scott also ranks second in the MAC in minutes played (37.4), but even that doesn't tell the entire story. Over her last seven games, the sophomore has played 277 of 280 available minutes. In all, she has played all 40 minutes in seven of 14 games this year.
FRESHMAN PHENOM: Katie Davidson has made a quick impression on the basketball team. The freshman has scored in double figures in 10 games this season and is averaging 12.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Â Her scoring average ranks 17th in the MAC and is second-best (20th nationally) in the conference among freshmen. She also has a chance to become one of Miami's best freshman in school history, despite the shortened season. Davidson is currently on pace to score 300 points, which would be the sixth-most points in Miami history for a freshmen, trailing only
Lauren Dickerson (520), Courtney Osborn (513), Kim Lancaster (432), Amanda Jackson (391) and
Peyton Scott (376).Â
SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST: Kelly McLaughlin scored 188 points and had 125 rebounds in her first three years with the RedHawks, averaging 4.1 points and 2.7 rebounds. This year, the senior has already scored 145 points and recorded 88 rebounds in 12 games for an average of 12.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. She ranks 18th in the MAC in scoring, eighth in rebounds and first in shooting percentage (56.2%).
