OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University women's basketball team (11-11, 4-6 MAC) exploded for a season-high 92 points in a 92-83 win over Toledo on Wednesday night.
Peyton Scott had a career-high 28 points to lead a trio of RedHawks with 20-point games.
Lauren Dickerson and
Savannah Kluesner also reached the 20-point plateau with 23 and 21 points, respectively.
After Toledo scored an early basket, Miami put together eight-straight points to lead 8-2 at the media timeout with 6:16 to play in the opening quarter. The RedHawks defense held the Rockets without a point for 4:27 during the 8-0 run. Miami would not relinquish this lead.
Miami scored the next 11 points to take a 19-4 lead with less than three minutes remaining in the period. Scott accounted for six of these points while
Abbey Hoff had the lone Miami three-pointer.
The Rockets scored the final eight points of the quarter to close the gap to 19-12 at the first-quarter break. Miami shot 60 percent from the floor during the period.
Second-quarter scoring began in favor of Toledo by an 8-6 margin as the Rockets trimmed the RedHawks' lead to 25-20 after three minutes of play. Miami responded with the next eight points, including triples from Dickerson and Hoff, to increase the lead to 33-20 with 5:26 to play in the first half. The RedHawks led by 10 at the media timeout midway through the second quarter.
Hoff made her third three-pointer as she was 3-of-3 from three-point range during the first half.
Kluesner and Scott strung together a seven-point run to bring Miami's lead to 43-27 with under a minute to play in the half. Miami outscored Toledo 26-17 during the second quarter to increase the lead to 45-29 going into the locker room. The RedHawks shot 61.3 percent from the floor during the first half.
The Miami defense held Toledo without a field goal for the first 2:34 of the second half. The RedHawks held a 57-35 lead at the media timeout with 6:44 remaining in the third quarter. The Rockets scored the next five points and forced a Miami timeout with 5:32 to play in the third quarter.
Dickerson reached the 20-point plateau for the fourth time in the last five games with 2:38 to play in the third quarter. The RedHawks ended the third quarter with a three-pointer from
Kenzie Schmitz to give Miami a 71-50 advantage going into the final quarter of play.
Scott had the first four points for Miami in the fourth quarter before a triple by
Monique Esbrand gave the RedHawks a 78-59 lead with six minutes to play.
A three-pointer from Scott with four minutes to play would be the RedHawks' last field goal but free throws down the stretch capped scoring at 92-83 to hold off the Rockets' fourth-quarter push.
Miami wraps up its home stand on Saturday as the RedHawks host Central Michigan at 2 p.m. for ALS Awareness and Baby Day.
