The senior broke the 400m record she set just last weekend.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - After setting two school records last week, Olivia Bechtel didn't wait long to break another as she and the RedHawks ran at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational Saturday. In addition, several other Miami athletes competed at Wittenberg in their Steemer Showcase.
Bechtel, who broke Miami's 200 and 400 school records last weekend in Boston, put together a new record 400 run. The senior shattered last week's time of 53.44 with a run of 53.07 to win the event. This run stands as one of the top 20 times recorded across the season thus far; Bechtel is already the MAC leader in both the 400 and 200.
Elsewhere, Miami had plenty of good performances in their final meet before next week's conference championships. Emily Akin put together her best mile run of the year, running a 4:49.15 for third place. This gives her the second-best run the event in the MAC this season. Kayla Walters also had a good day for the 'Hawks on the track, taking third in the 60m hurdles before running a personal-best 8.10 in the finals of the 60m dash.Â
In the field, the women's high jump was a highlight of the day as the pair of Hannah Bush and Elise Walker both had big PRs. Both of them cleared heights of 1.65m (5-5) to take top-fives in the event. Hannah Falcione tied her personal best in the long jump as well.
For the men at Notre Dame, Sean Torpy had another big-time run in the 800. Although falling just shy of his own personal record in the event, his run of 1:48.53 still earned him the win in the event. This time is also good for the 11th-best recorded in the nation this year, joining Finley Mclear (9th) at the top of the event performance list.
Meanwhile at Wittenberg, a slew of athletes posted PRs on the day and the RedHawks earned top-five finishes in nearly every event. It was Jeremiah Hunter who led the way for Miami with an event win, taking first in the 60m with a time of 6.84.
The RedHawk women will next turn towards the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. Hosted by Akron this year, the conference meet will take place on Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, Feb. 29.
