DENVER – A four-goal second period by No. 7 Denver broke open what was a one-goal game as Miami hockey fell 7-0 on Saturday.
The RedHawks drop to 6-19-5 with a 3-14-3-2 mark in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
Denver (19-8-5, 9-7-4-3 NCHC) outshot Miami 12-6 in the opening frame, though
Ben Kraws was equal to the task in the early going. In a fast-moving period, a minor penalty on Miami opened the door for the only scoring of the frame. The Pioneers worked the puck around the perimeter before feeding Cole Guttman for a one-timer at the left faceoff circle with 5:37 left in the opening frame. While MU got a couple good chances in the form of a 3-on-1 rush with close range bids by
Scott Corbett along with a later rip from the slot by
Ryan Savage, Devin Cooley was able to make that goal stand up through 20 minutes.
The Pioneers added four more goals in the second period with Ian Mitchell starting it off at the 6:53 mark. Emilio Pettersen scored the first of two goals in the frame with 9:19 left, Griffin Mendel scored at the 15:56 left and Pettersen scored again with 1:32 left before intermission to dig the RedHawks into a 5-0 hole.
DU netted two more goals in the third to cap the scoring and killed off three MU power plays to preserve the shutout in the final 20 minutes.
Denver outshot Miami 31-22 and went 2-for-3 on the power play while killing all five MU man advantages.
Ben Kraws made 24 saves in net.
The RedHawks play their final home games of the season next weekend when they host Omaha in a conference series. Friday's series opener begins at 7:05 p.m.
