Five of the day's six singles matches went to three sets.
CINCINNATI - In a contest that came down to several extremely close three-set matches, the Miami RedHawks (3-4) fell by a narrow 4-3 margin to the Xavier Musketeers (4-5) at Harper's Point in Cincinnati.
Xavier took a narrow doubles session to claim the match's first point. After a quick win for the Musketeers on court one, they were able to clinch the point with a comeback win on court three. Miami's team of Lysova/Kalita held a lead and was on the verge of winning at second doubles, but a close final set on the third court went XU's way to end the doubles session.
In a singles session filled with three-set matches, Xavier did take the only straight-sets pairing of the day, winning on court five to double their lead to 2-0. Each other match was a back-and-forth affair; Laura Rico, making her debut at first singles with Brindtha Ramasamy sidelined, was the next to finish and first to give Miami a point. After falling behind in set one, she bounced back and rolled through Xavier's number one Ahmier Kyle to win in three sets and narrow the gap to 2-1.
Lena Babunski was the next to post a comeback win for Miami; after being down 5-2 and on match point, the junior rallied back to win the next five straight games and tie the match at two apiece.
This left three matches in progress, with the first to win two as the winner of the match. Xavier would get the first on court two in a third-set tiebreak before clinching the match with a win on court four.
Milana Lysova finished out the match with a consolation point for the RedHawks to make the final score 4-3.
The RedHawks return to action tomorrow when they host Western Kentucky at 4 p.m. at Riverside Athletic Club in Hamilton.
