Western Michigan scored the final four goals of the night to take the series.
OXFORD, Ohio – After a quick start, the Miami hockey team was unable to generate much of an attack as it dropped a 4-1 decision to Western Michigan on Saturday.
The result gives WMU (15-10-5, 9-6-3-2 National Collegiate Hockey) the series win.
The game got off to a fast start as the RedHawks (6-17-5, 3-12-3-2 NCHC) struck 39 seconds into the game as Monte Graham fired a wrist shot from a sharp angle at the right wing off the far post and in for his fifth of the year. Rourke Russell and Gordie Green each drew assists on the play that put MU up 1-0.
That lead lasted all of nine seconds as Cole Gallant got fed atop the crease and buried it up close to leave it 1-1 with just 48 seconds expired off the clock.
Western Michigan went on the evening's first power play of the night about six minutes in and threatened for most of the man advantage. The Broncos hit a post and Ben Kraws made a few close range saves to keep the contest tied up.
After MU had a slim 5-4 shot advantage, WMU went up in that category 10-6 with seven and change left in the opening stanza. Miami cut into that margin with a few good looks that Brandon Bussi kept out.
WMU nearly went in front late in the first when Drew Worrad was fed in front on a breakout, but Kraws stuck with him to make a point blank save.
With 1:56 to go until the horn, Miami went on its first power play of the evening, but was unable to generate any attack as the game remained 1-1 after 20 minutes.
Miami struggled to sustain attack in the second period as it went nearly 10 minutes without a shot on goal in the middle frame. Kraws was sharp over much of that stretch, which included a point blank save on Rhett Kingston on a backdoor feed.
The Broncos eventually gained their first lead of the night at the 9:52 mark when Cam Lee eluded a defender at the point and wristed a shot through traffic to make it 2-1. The RedHawks started to put more pressure on the Bronco net in the final 10 minutes of the period. Jack Clement had a good opportunity at point blank range that was stopped by Bussi with under eight minutes left in the period.
A Miami turnover proved costly at the 12:36 mark as the miscue sprung Dawson DiPietro for a breakaway goal to make it 3-1. While MU pressed on the attack over the final seven minutes and change, it could not get one back as it entered the third period trailing by two.
Looking to pull closer, the RedHawks generated some opportunities in the early stages of the third as Green had a couple partial breakaways that Bussi stopped. WMU's netminder saved his biggest stop for the seven minute mark when he robbed Karch Bachman at the back door on a one-timer feed off a 2-on-1 rush. Shortly thereafter, the Broncos made it 4-1 when Paul Washe picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated in on his off wing and buried a shot up close with 12:30 to go.
WMU outshot MU by a 37-20 count. Neither team converted on the power play as Western Michigan was 0-for-3 and Miami 0-for-2. Kraws finished the night with 33 saves.
Miami returns to the ice on Friday when it opens a series at Denver. Opening faceoff is at 9:07 p.m. ET.
