OMAHA, Neb. — Freshman Hampus Rydqvist scored his first career goal for the game-winner to give the Miami University ice hockey team a 1-0 victory over #18/RV Omaha Mavericks at Baxter Arena on Saturday night. The two NCHC rival schools skated to a scoreless first and third periods. Freshman goaltender Ludvig Persson stopped all 30 shots for Miami to receive his first career win as a RedHawk, along with his first career shutout.
The Miami defense kept the dynamic Omaha offense quiet for all game. The Mavericks were ranked the top team in the conference in scoring offense, and the RedHawks were able to hand Omaha their first shutout loss on their season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 16:49 2nd (Miami 1-0) | For the third game in a row, the RedHawks scored the game's opening goal. Casey Gilling returned to the RedHawk lineup and had the puck at the left face-off circle, ready to pass to an open Rydqvist. Rydqvist shot the puck, and a Maverick defenseman blocked it, but Rydqvist cleaned up his rebound and buried it in to give Miami the lead. Rydqvist's goal, the first of the game, was also the first point and goal for his career.
GAME NOTES:
- The Mavericks outshot Miami on the night by a 30-12 tally. For the RedHawks, Rydqvist led in individual shots on goal, with three to his name.
- With the win over the Mavericks, the RedHawks get one in the win column and continue the season with a 1-5-0 on the season so far.
- The RedHawks had the advantage in blocked shots, as they blocked 21 as a team.
- The Miami penalty kill was flawless, as they killed the two penalties
