Ohio Takes 3-1 Victory Over Volleyball Saturday

ATHENS, Ohio – The Miami University volleyball team had a balanced attack against Ohio, but too many attack errors led to a 1-3 (22-25, 25-22, 14-25, ) setback on Saturday. The RedHawks are 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bobcats are 9-6 overall and 1-1 in the MAC.

Six different RedHawks had six or more kills on the night for Miami. It was led by senior outside hitter Taylor Daignault, who finished with 10 kills. The Red and White put down 50 kills, but were hurt by making a season-high 33 errors to hit .108 for the match.

Despite two kills early from senior middle hitter Margaret Payne, Ohio was able to build an 8-6 advantage in set one. After trading side outs until the Bobcats lead was 11-10, Ohio went on an 8-2 run to build a seven-point cushion at 19-12. Three kills from sophomore outside hitter Sophie Riemersma off assists from junior setter Morgan Seaman were part of a 5-0 run that pulled the RedHawks with two. OU increased it to 21-17, but Miami kills by freshman outside hitter Allyson Severance and Payne made it 20-21. The comeback was not to be as Ohio closed on a 4-2 stretch to take a 25-22 victory.

Trailing 10-12 in set two, a kill from Daignault, a solo block by junior right side hitter Sarah Wojick and an Ohio attack error put the Red and White on top. The teams traded side outs until it was tied at 16. A kill from junior middle hitter Avarie Powell off an assist from sophomore setter Louise Comerford got the Miami offense moving again. It was part of a 6-0 run that was capped by two straight aces from Seaman that made it 22-16. The Bobcats were able to close within two with a 6-2 run, but a kill from sophomore outside hitter Gaby Harper finished off a 25-22 win.

Seaman had a service ace, while Harper and Powell each put down kills to help Miami take a 5-2 lead to begin set three. However, Ohio was able to take advantage of 11 RedHawk attack errors during the frame. Tied at 10, the Bobcats went on a 15-4 run to take a 25-14 victory and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Wojick had two kills and a block as set four started out much more competitive. Tied at eight, Ohio took four of the next five points to take a 12-9 lead. Two straight kills from Daignault cut the deficit to one, but the Bobcats responded with a 0-3 run to take control at 21-15. Wojick ended the run with a kill, but the RedHawks could not get any closer as Ohio closed out a 25-17 victory to win the match in four sets.
