
Miami Falls to No. 16 Delaware as Late Rally Falls Short

The RedHawks fell by a 1-2 margin on Monday.
NEWARK, Del. – The Miami University field hockey team (0-2) wrapped up its Labor Day weekend action with a 1-2 loss at No. 16 Delaware.
The Blue Hens earned three penalty corners in the first seven minutes of the game but could not capitalize as Miami's defense supplemented Isabelle Perese's first two saves of the day.
Allie Grace Joyner took Miami's first shot of the day, on goal, but the teams remained scoreless after one quarter of play.
The Blue Hens struck first on a penalty stroke goal during the 22nd minute of play.
Despite Delaware taking 14 shots and earning eight penalty corners during the first half, Miami trailed just 1-0 at halftime. Perese made eight saves in the first half.
The Blue Hens increased their lead to 2-0 during the 36th minute as a shot was whipped into the top portion of the net after both teams struggled to gain possession inside Miami's circle.
Marie Gorner, Lexie Nugent and Leonor Berlie all put shots on goal during the third quarter but Delaware goalkeeper Sydney Rhodes stood in front of all three to keep the RedHawks off the scoreboard through 45 minutes of play.
Joyner cut Delaware's lead in half during the 50th minute of play with her first goal of the season. Hana Sinno picked up the assist.
The RedHawks offense put a considerable amount of pressure on the Blue Hens defense but ran out of time before Miami could tie the game.
Perese made eight saves, all in the first half, as the RedHawks allowed only one shot on goal during the second half of play.
Miami is back on the road on Friday at 3 p.m. as the RedHawks play Indiana. The Red and White play again on Sunday in the home opener against Saint Louis at noon for heroes appreciation day.
