Volleyball Earns Hard Fought Victory Over North Carolina

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Miami University volleyball team had an all-around team effort as it was able to knock off North Carolina, 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23) in a hard-fought neutral site match at Oakland University on Friday. The RedHawks improve to 4-3 on the season, while the Tar Heels fall to 1-5.

Four different Miami players finished with double-doubles, led by sophomore outside hitter Gaby Harper. Harper led the 'Hawks with 15 kills, and also had a team-high 14 digs. Senior outside hitter Taylor Daignault had 10 kills and 11 digs. Both setters were big in the back row. Junior Morgan Seaman finished with 29 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore Louise Comerford had 25 assists and 10 digs. Junior right side hitter Sarah Wojick also had a big match with 11 kills, including eight in the first two sets.

While the outside and right side hitters led Miami early in the match, its two middle hitters helped finish it off. Senior Margaret Payne had 10 kills and a .318 attack percentage. Junior Avarie Powell set a new career-high with eight kills. She made only one error in 18 attempts for an attack percentage of .183.

"Strong team effort with contributions from every hitter and blocker," said head coach Carolyn Condit. "Tonight we had four attackers with double-digit kills, while reflects solid passing and our setters finding a nice mix. Most important we are becoming a team -- working together with courage and pride."

The teams traded points early in set one. Tied at eight, kills from Powell and Daignault off assists from Comerford, and a service ace by senior libero Lindsay Dauch were part of a 5-0 run that forced the Tar Heels to call timeout. Out of the break, kills from Daignault and sophomore outside hitter Gaby Harper increased the advantage to 16-10 and caused UNC to use its other timeout. Wojick put down two kills to help the RedHawks build their biggest lead at 22-14. That proved to be more than enough as a kill from Daignault finished off a 25-19 win.

Set two was a set of long runs by both teams. North Carolina scored the first three points, only to see Miami score the next three. The Tar Heels then went on an 8-3 run to take an 11-6 advantage before a service error and kills from Daignault, Payne and sophomore right side hitter Sophie Riemersma cut the deficit to 11-10. The Tar Heels responded with a 6-1 run to build their largest lead at 17-11. Two kills from Harper and a service ace by freshman outside hitter Lindsay Taylor were part of a 7-1 run that tied the score at 18. UNC scored the next three, but Miami answered with three in a row to tie it at 21. The Tar Heels scored next, but kills from Wojick, Daignault and Powell put the 'Hawks on top for the first time in the set at 24-22. North Carolina fought it off once, but a kill by Riemersma gave Miami a 25-23 victory.

The RedHawks scored the first two points of set three with kills from Daignault and Riemersma off assists from Seaman. North Carolina went on an 8-3 run to take an 8-5 advantage. A service ace from junior libero Abigail Huser and a kill from Riemersma helped tie the score at 10. The Tar Heels then would go on mini runs to take an advantage of a few points, but Miami always answered back to tie the score. After UNC went up 21-18, three straight from the 'Hawks capped by a kill from Payne tied it at 21. However tied at 22, North Carolina scored three in a row to capture a 25-22 win.

Set four did not start out well as Miami fell behind, 4-9. Harper put down back-to-back kills, while Powell recorded one as part of a 7-3 run that cut the deficit to one at 11-12. The RedHawks were finally able to get back even at 13-13. The teams traded side outs until it was tied at 17, where a kill from Harper gave Miami the lead for the first time in the set. A service error retied the score, but a kill from Payne and a service ace by Comerford gave the 'Hawks a two-point advantage at 20-18. The teams again traded side outs until a service ace from Seaman made it match point at 24-21. The Tar Heels fought it off twice, but Miami was undeterred as it put down a kill to finish off a 25-23 victory and take the match in four sets.

The RedHawks held a 78-70 advantage in digs with six different players reaching double-digits. Huser had 12 digs, while Riemersma had 10 to go along with six kills.

Miami returns to action on Saturday when it takes on Oakland at 4 p.m.
