RedHawks Clash with Buckeyes on Friday Night

Miami and Ohio State meet up for the first time since 1997 on Friday.

OXFORD, Ohio – Following a split weekend in Kentucky, the Miami soccer team takes on in-state foe Ohio State in a Friday night showdown.

The RedHawks (1-4) kick off against the Buckeyes (0-4-1) at 7 p.m. on Friday night.

Miami came from behind last Friday night to post a 2-1 double overtime victory at Morehead State for its first victory. Trailing late in the second half, MU got goals from Olivia Winnett and Lyda Bogdanovitch to secure its first road win since the 2016 season. The RedHawks dropped a 3-0 decision on Sunday at Kentucky, though nearly tied it up in the second half and generated long stretches of sustained pressure against the Wildcats. While MU's 0.60 goals per match are 11th in the Mid-American Conference, it has been pressuring offensively with its 12 shots per match ranking fourth in the league.

Ohio State is winless at 0-4-1, though all four of its losses have come to teams currently ranked or receiving top-25 votes and all but one of the setbacks has been by a single goal. Kayla Fisher (1g, 3a) has contributed to four of OSU's five goals while Marissa Birzon's two tallies lead the team. Jordan Silkowitz has started each match in goal and has a 2.37 goals against average along with a .706 save percentage.

Live stats will be provided courtesy of Ohio State and a video stream is available to Big Ten Network Plus subscribers as well.

All-Time Series: Miami has one prior meeting with Ohio State, a 6-0 setback in its inaugural season back in 1997.

Tight Late: While the results haven't quite been there to this point, Miami has found itself in every match well into the second half of contests. The RedHawks have entered halftime tied or within a goal in all five contests as it tries to get its offense going.

Youth Will Be Served: The RedHawks boast an incredibly young roster with 21 of their 25 players being freshmen or sophomores. This marks the third-straight year that Miami has had at least nine freshmen on its fall roster. Of the 16 Miami players to see the pitch on opening weekend, seven were freshmen and eight were newcomers.

Keeping it Close: Miami's non-conference schedule is not only confined entirely to the Ohio Valley, it's nearly entirely in the Buckeye State itself. Five of MU's seven non-conference tilts are against in-state foes (Dayton, Wright State, Cleveland State, Ohio State and Xavier) while its other two (Morehead State and Kentucky) are within 150 miles of Oxford.

What's for the Encore: At 11 players, Miami's sophomore class is its largest group on the roster. The bulk of them saw extensive playing time as freshmen, combining for 30 points, 113 matches played and 89 starts among the returning sophomores. The three top minute getters for the Red & White last year were freshmen.
