
Volleyball Sweeps South Carolina Upstate

Allyson Severance leads the way with 14 kills
OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University volleyball team put on a dominating performance as it swept South Carolina Upstate, 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-20) as it continued play at the Miami Best Western Sycamore Inn Invitational on Saturday. The RedHawks improve to 2-0, while the Spartans fall to 0-3.
It was a breakout game for freshman outside hitter Allyson Severance. She led the way with 14 kills and also had five digs. Severance made only two attack errors in 28 attempts for a hitting percentage of .429.
As a team, the Red and White had only 12 attack errors the entire match as they finished with a .282 hitting percentage. Miami held USC Upstate to only 25 total kills for the match and a .106 attack percentage.
Two kills each from Severance and senior middle hitter Margaret Payne helped Miami jump to a 9-3 advantage to begin set one. The Spartans answered with a 6-1 run to pull within one at 9-10. A kill from freshman outside hitter Lindsay Taylor off an assist from sophomore setter Louise Comerford started a dominating run for the 'Hawks that would last for the entirety of the set. Junior setter Morgan Seaman had a service ace, while two kills each from Payne and senior outside hitter Taylor Daignault were part of a 15-3 closing stretch that gave Miami a 25-12 win.
Set two was back and forth early until South Carolina Upstate had a 7-6 lead. Two kills from junior middle hitter Avarie Powell, along with two from Severance started a 7-0 run that put Miami in control, 13-7. A kill from Daignault and a service ace by junior libero Abigail Huser made it 17-10. Payne had two kills to help increase the advantage to 10 at 22-12. A kill from Powell finished off the 25-14 victory.
Severance had two more kills as Miami took a 9-3 advantage early in set three. The Spartans did not give up, answering with a 12-6 run to tie the score at 15. A USC Upstate attack error and a service ace by junior right side hitter Sarah Wojick got the RedHawk offense rolling again. Miami built the lead back up to five and finished off a 25-20 win with one final kill from Powell.
Daignault had eight kills for the RedHawks and a team-high 14 digs. Payne finished with six kills, while Powell had five. Comerford led Miami with 22 assists.
The RedHawks conclude play at the Miami Best Western Invitational later Saturday against Northwestern at 7 p.m. With both teams 2-0, the winner will become tournament champion. The match will air live on RedHawks All-Access for those who have a subscription.
