The Miami University baseball team welcomes Western Michigan to McKie Field at Hayden Park this weekend for the final home series of the season. Friday's game will being at 5 p.m. Saturday's game starts at 4 p.m. and Sunday's first pitch is at 1 p.m. All games will air on RedHawks All-Access for those who have a subscription.
SENIORS TO BE HONORED
Prior to their final home game at McKie Field at Hayden Park, seven seniors will be honored for their contributions to the program in a ceremony. Those being honored for the RedHawks are
Andy Almquist,
Jack Corbell,
Cole Gnetz,
Bailey Martin,
Shane Smith,
Mackay Williams and
Alexx Zielinski. The ceremony will take place on the field at 12:30 p.m.
MAC RACE
It's a tight race for the MAC regular season crown as teams head into the final two weekends. Central Michigan is in front at 16-5. Ball State is a game behind the Chippewas at 14-5. Miami comes in next at 13-7, while Kent State is right behind at 12-7. It appears the battle for the final two spots in the six-team MAC Tournament will come down to Northern Illinois, which is in fifth place at 11-10, Ohio (in sixth place at 10-10) and Western Michigan (in seventh place at 9-10). The top two finishers in the league get first round byes in the double elimination tournament, which takes place May 22-26 at Sprenger Stadium in Avon, Ohio.
ABOUT WESTERN MICHIGAN
Western Michigan is 16-27 on the season and 9-10 in the MAC. Last weekend, the Broncos earned a key sweep of Eastern Michigan to get back in the race for a MAC Tournament spot. On Tuesday, they fell at Pittsburgh, 14-3, in their midweek contest. WMU is one of the MAC's better hitting teams. It has scored 266 runs on the season and has a team batting average of .287. The Broncos are led by sophomore outfielder Blake Dunn. He ranks second in the MAC with a .399 batting average and also has five home runs, 27 RBIs and a league leading 27 stolen bases. Pitching has been an Achilles' heel for Western Michigan as it has a team ERA of 6.47. Scheduled Saturday starter, freshman Brady Miller has been a bright spot. He is 3-2 with a 3.80 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 45.0 innings pitched.
SERIES WITH WESTERN MICHIGANÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Western Michigan holds a 94-70 lead in the all-time series with Miami. Last season in Kalamazoo, the RedHawks took two out of three from the Broncos, May 4-6, 2018. It started in Friday's game when the Red and White scored seven runs over the final three innings to come from behind and take a 10-6 victory. On Saturday, Western Michigan scored six runs in the bottom of the second on the way to a 6-1 win. In the rubber match on Sunday, a pitchers' duel was won, 3-1, by the RedHawks.
UP AHEAD
There is no midweek game for Miami next week. It instead travels to Mount Pleasant, Michigan for a key regular season ending three-game series against Central Michigan, May 16-18. The game on Thursday, May 16 will begin at 3 p.m. The contests are Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18 will each start at 1 p.m.
