AKRON, Ohio – The Miami University softball team (34-14, 16-4 MAC) shutout Western Michigan (18-27, 9-11 MAC) by a 2-0 margin in its first game of the 2019 MAC Tournament.

Courtney Vierstra pitched the complete-game shutout for the RedHawks. She gave up three hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.

Vierstra struck out the final two batters of the first inning and struck out the side in the second for five-straight strikeouts.

Lily Wilmot had Miami's first hit of the game, a two-out double, in the second inning but would not score.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning. Mackenzie Moore and Hannah Obrey each hit two-out singles to put runners on first and second. Morgan Lott batted-in the game-winning run with an RBI single. Lott advanced to second on the throw home that Moore beat to score. Obrey scored the second and final run of the game on a passed ball.

Lott led the Miami offense with its lone RBI. Lott was joined by Johniann Wahl, Wilmot, Moore and Obrey as each had one hit in the ball game.

Miami will play No. 5 Central Michigan on Thursday at 1 p.m. as CMU was victorious in its first game of the MAC Tournament against No. 4 Northern Illinois.
