OXFORD, Ohio – A huge six-RBI day for freshman designated hitter
Cole Andrews, capped by a 10th-inning walk-off home run, led the Miami University baseball team to a 7-6 victory over Cincinnati on Tuesday. The RedHawks improve to 34-13 on the season, while the Bearcats fall to 22-26.
Andrews finished the game 3-for-5 with six RBIs and one run scored as his hits continued to keep Miami in the game after Cincinnati had gone in front.
The Bearcats came out swinging with two outs in the top of the first as they rallied to put four runs on the board and take an early 4-0 advantage.
The RedHawks fought right back with three runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, junior left fielder
Cal Elvers singled up the middle. After the second out was recorded, a single to left field by junior third baseman
Jordan Stephens moved him up to second. Senior right fielder
Mackay Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Andrews then had his first big hit of the game, smoking one just past the outstretched glove of the Bearcat shortstop and all the way to the wall to score all three runs and pull Miami within one at 4-3.
It stayed that way until the top of the fifth, when UC capitalized on a pair of RedHawk errors to score twice and increase its advantage to 6-3.
Miami battled to tie the score in the bottom half of the fifth. With one out, Elvers, junior second baseman
Landon Stephens and
Jordan Stephens each hit singles to load the bases. Williams drew a walk to force home Elvers and cut the deficit to 6-4. Andrews then came through once again with a single to left field that brought home Landon and
Jordan Stephens and made it 6-6.
RedHawk pitching was stellar over the final five innings as junior
Nick Urbantke, senior
Cole Gnetz and senior
Andy Almquist teamed up to keep Cincinnati off the board. In the top of the 10th, the Bearcats got a leadoff double, but Almquist was able to get a strikeout, a ground out and a fly out to strand him.
That led to the bottom of the 10th where Andrews was the leadoff batter. After taking the first pitch for a ball, he smoked the next pitch he saw over the left field wall just under the scoreboard. Once it was clear that the Bearcat outfielder had not made the catch, Miami had secured the walk-off, 7-6, win.
Elvers finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Jordan Stephens was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Almquist got the victory after pitching the final two innings, improving his record to 5-0 on the season.
The final home weekend is upon Miami as it hosts Western Michigan for a three-game series. The Friday contest begins at 5 p.m., the Saturday game will start at 4 p.m. and on Sunday, first pitch will be at 1 p.m. Prior to Sunday's game, the RedHawks will hold their Senior Day ceremonies.
