Every individual NCAA prelim qualifier is in action on Thursday.
OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University track & field program's postseason qualifiers are eying big performances as they take on the NCAA East Region Preliminary this weekend.
MU heads into the postseason meet with five individuals seeded in the top 17 of their respective events along with a record-setting relay team looking to reach new heights in the three-day meet that runs Thursday through Saturday.
Thursday's competition opener sees all five of the RedHawks' individual qualifiers in action, beginning with Danielle Collier in the women's javelin (noon). Kenny Glenn wraps up the Red & White's field competitors when he hits the long jump runway at 3:30 p.m. On the track, twins Sean Torpy and Christopher Torpy in the men's 1500m first round (6 p.m.), Olivia Bechtel puts her speed to the test in the women's 400m first round (7:20 p.m.) and Sean Torpy returns to the track for the 800m first round (8:35 p.m.).
Should the track competitors advance, Bechtel will vie for a berth in the NCAA Outdoor Championships at 5:30 p.m. in the 400m quarterfinals on Friday while Sean Torpy aims to do likewise in the 800m quarterfinals at 6:45 p.m. on Friday. If either or both Torpy twins advance in the 1500m, they'll jump back on the track for that event at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday. Miami's competitors conclude at 9:25 p.m. on Saturday as the women's 4x400m team of Bechtel, Emily Hooker, Sarah Bruns and Kalliopi Kountouri (with Faith Baxter potentially running as an alternate) makes its postseason debut.
This group of RedHawk qualifiers combined to win seven Mid-American Conference titles and break three school records during the 2019 outdoor campaign.
For the men, Sean Torpy paved the way by winning three individual titles at the MAC Outdoor Championships two weeks ago and he is seeded 12th in both the 800m (1:48.53) and 1500m (3:44.24). His twin Chris, who qualified for the national meet a year ago, is slotted in at 17th in the 1500m (3:44.52). Glenn, the school-record holder in the long jump (25-7 1/4), is also seeded 12th.
Collier is the highest-seeded RedHawk with her top javelin throw of 175-3 sitting sixth in the competition. She captured her second MAC javelin title two weeks ago and has finished in the top three of every competition she has entered this season, winning the event five times in her six meets as she aims for her second trip to the national meet. Bechtel is making her postseason debut thanks to a school-record 400m time of 52.85 that is seeded 12th. She also anchored the 4x400m relay to its second-straight MAC outdoor title and helped that group set a school record with a time of 3:38.29, which has the group seeded 23rd.
The top 12 finishers in their respective events advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas from June 5-8. Live results will be available for free at the competition while a subscription based video stream is also available all weekend.
