Miami is set to take on Vanderbilt Friday afternoon.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Mid-American Conference Champion Miami tennis team (12-10, 6-1 MAC) are set to take to the national stage this Friday as the RedHawks play their NCAA Tournament first round match against the regional host Vanderbilt Commodores. Friday's match is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT/4 p.m. ET at VU's Currey Tennis Center.
The winner of the match advances to face the Georgia Tech/Ohio State winner in a second round tilt on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
After clinching the regular season MAC crown, the RedHawks booked their appearance in the 2019 NCAA Tournament by winning last weekend's MAC Tournament in Buffalo. After cruising past Ball State 4-0 in the semifinals, the 'Hawks faced a tough match in the championship but were able to down second-seeded Akron 4-3. Senior Emily Struble provided the dramatic clinch as she broke a 3-3 tie with a three-set win at second singles. Struble was named MAC Tournament MVP for her efforts, and was joined by Makenzie Myers on the All-Tournament team.
MATCHUP WITH THE COMMODORES
Vanderbilt enters the weekend as the tournament's overall eight seed. The Commodores, last season's national runners-up, bounced back from a 4-3 loss in the 2018 championship match against Stanford with a 16-7 record this season. This includes a 10-3 record in the tough Southeastern Conference, in which the Commodores finished third overall. VU is coming off a loss in the SEC Tournament semifinals to eventual champion South Carolina. The Commodores are led by Fernanda Contreras (ranked sixth in the nation) and Christina Rosca (ranked 18th), both First Team All-SEC selections. Miami and Vanderbilt have met four times in the past, with the series tied at two wins apiece.
CHAMPIONSHIP PEDIGREE
The Miami program added to its successful history this season, as the RedHawks' conference championship marked the 23rd time that MU has won the MAC. Friday's match will be Miami's sixth time in the national tournament, with the MAC auto-bid starting in 1997. This is the RedHawks first appearance in the tournament since the 'Hawks went three straight years from 2013-15.
