Miami Hosts Bowling Green for Final Game of Series

The RedHawks and Falcons play the third game of this season’s series on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University softball team (20-13, 5-3 MAC) hosts Bowling Green (15-20, 3-7 MAC) for the third and final regular-season matchup between the two teams on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

This game is the Code Red Appreciation Game. The first 50 students that renew their Code Red membership or sign up for next school year at the game will receive a free Miami hat.

REDHAWKS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER AT BOWLING GREEN

Miami won both of this season's previous meetings with Bowling Green, winning the series with a sweep of the doubleheader at BG last Tuesday. The RedHawks won the first game by a 10-2 margin in six innings before taking game two by a 7-2 margin.

Courtney Vierstra pitched the complete game in the 10-2 win, giving up just one earned run while striking out seven batters. Haeley Tran (3-of-4, three runs) and Lily Wilmot (2-of-3, three RBI, one run led the 'Hawks offense. Brianna Pratt earned the win in game two with Vierstra coming in as relief. Ashton Slone (2-of-3, three RBI, two runs) and Morgan Lott (2-of-4, two RBI, one run) led Miami's offense.

MIAMI TAKES SERIES AT NORTHERN ILLINOIS

The RedHawks won games one and three in DeKalb to take the season's series against NIU. Miami won Friday's game by a 3-1 margin on a three-run shot by Wilmot in the top of the seventh. Vierstra earned the win as she pitched the complete game and struck out 11 – the sixth time she's reached at least 10 strikeouts in a game this season.

Miami fell in game two on a walk-off RBI double before holding off Northern Illinois 4-3 in the final game of the series. Jada Dotson hit her third triple of the season to lead the RedHawks with three RBI. Taylor Rathe earned the win in the circle with Vierstra picking up the save.

REDHAWKS PITCHING STAFF CONTINUES TO IMPRESS

Miami's big three rank second in the conference in ERA (3.10), shutouts (5), saves (5), hits (204), strikeouts (243), strikeouts looking (65) and opposing batting average (.235). The RedHawks pitchers lead the league in runs (116), earned runs (99), doubles (27) and triples (2). Miami is the only team in the league to have given up less than 100 earned runs on the season.

OPPONENT PREVIEW

The Falcons are 15-20 overall and 3-7 in MAC play so far this season. Bowling Green is fresh off a series with at Ball State last weekend, winning games one and two to take its first conference series win of the season. The Falcons won the Friday game by a 4-1 margin and the first game on Saturday by a 5-4 margin before dropping the last game in extra innings.

Madi McCoy leads Bowling Green's offense in batting average (.386, among starters), home runs (7), RBI (23), total bases (50), slugging percentage (.714) and on-base percentage (.427). Alex Sorgi leads the team with 18 stolen bases on 21 attempts.

Meredith Miller continues to lead BG's pitching staff in ERA (3.17), wins (11), appearances (25), games started (19), complete games (8), innings pitched (119.1), strikeouts (119) and opponents' batting average (.227).

Join the Miami softball team in partnering with Soap for Hope and the Oxford Food Pantry to collect donations of unopened shampoo, soaps, toothpaste, lotion and canned food. Items will be distributed to local charities like the Miami Food Pantry, Oxford Food Pantry and Women Helping Women.
