CINCINNATI – The Miami University baseball team used a steady offensive attack to get back on the winning track and down Xavier, 7-4, on Tuesday. The RedHawks improve to 32-12 on the season, while the Musketeers fall to 19-25.
Miami got on the board first in the top of the third. Junior shortstop
Colin Shepherd led off with a double to center field. One batter later, redshirt junior third baseman
Jordan Stephens singled down the right field line to score Shepherd and make it 1-0.
Xavier answered in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run to take a 2-1 advantage.
The RedHawks immediately tied the game when senior right fielder
Mackay Williams led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run over the right field wall. It was his third round-tripper of the season. In the top of the fifth, Miami loaded the bases with one out. Junior left fielder
Cal Elvers was hit by a pitch to force home Shepherd and give the Red and White the lead. A single down the left field line by sophomore center fielder
Parker Massman scored junior second baseman
Landon Stephens and made it 4-2.
In the top of the sixth,
Jordan Stephens singled home sophomore catcher
Nate Stolze to give Miami a three-run lead, but Xavier answered with one in the bottom of the frame to make it 5-3.
With Elvers on base, junior first baseman
Charlie Harrigan hit his second home run of the season over the left field wall to put the RedHawks in front, 7-3.
The Musketeers hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth, but senior pitcher
Andy Almquist came in to throw in the bottom of the ninth and struck out the side for his fifth save of the season.
Harrigan finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored.
Jordan Stephens was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Junior pitcher
Nick Urbantke got the victory after going 3.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out four.
Miami returns to action Wednesday as it hosts Ohio State. First pitch is at 5 p.m. and it will air live on RedHawks All-Access for those who have a subscription.
