Broncos Spoil Senior Night

Miami will head to St. Cloud State to start the NCHC Playoffs next weekend.

OXFORD, Ohio – No. 12-13 Western Michigan netted the game's first five goals to spoil the Miami hockey team's Senior Night, 6-1, on Saturday.

Miami ends the regular season 11-21-4 with a 5-17-2-1 record in National Collegiate Hockey Conference play.

The Broncos jumped ahead in the first minute when Wade Allison converted a 2-on-1 feed at the back door to put them up 1-0.

Miami got a power play opportunity shortly after falling behind, but was unable to convert. An offensive zone penalty by Western Michigan led to another man advantage with 11:21 showing on the clock. Casey Gilling and Jonathan Gruden both got looks from the slot, but Trevor Gorsuch made both stops to leave the Red & White still down a goal.

Western Michigan used a power play of its own to go up 2-0, this time it was Dawson DiPietro converting a back-door feed from Colt Conrad with 6:06 to go in the frame. MU would kill off a later WMU power play, but faced an uphill battle trailing 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Things fell apart in the second as the RedHawks only registered three shots on goal while the Broncos padded their lead with three more tallies. Ethen Frank struck 5:10 into the period and WMU got power play goals from Conrad and Allison to grab a 5-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Ben Lown one-timed a feed from Phil Knies 3:13 into the third to end WMU's shutout bid, but that tally was answered 57 seconds later as Allison completed the hat trick to make it a 6-1 game.

The Broncos outshot the RedHawks by a 32-23 count and went 3-for-5 on the power play while killing off all three Miami power plays. Ryan Larkin made 20 saves in the first two periods while Jordan Uhelski made six stops on seven third period shots.

Miami will begin the NCHC Playoffs at St. Cloud State on Friday.
