OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University baseball team opened its four-game series with Youngstown State by taking a 6-3 victory on Friday. With its fifth straight victory, the RedHawks improve to 8-3 on the season. The Penguins fall to 0-10.
Youngstown State got a pair of baserunners in the top of the first off a walk and a single. It was able to drive both of them in on a pair of groundouts to take a 2-0 lead.
Miami was able to answer with three runs in the bottom of the second. Freshman designated hitter
Cole Andrews led off with a double down the left field line. After an out was recorded, Andrews advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior catcher
Cal Elvers drove him in with a single down the left field line. Senior right fielder MacKay Williams followed with a single, while a single to leftfield by sophomore centerfielder
Parker Massman brought home Elvers and tied the score. After a walk by junior second baseman
Colin Shepherd loaded the bases, redshirt junior outfielder
Kyle Winkler was hit by a pitch to force home Williams and give the RedHawks a 3-2 lead.
A solo home run in the top of the third by the Penguins tied the score at three.
In the bottom of the third junior first baseman
Charlie Harrigan led off with an infield single to the pitcher. One batter later, a triple to deep centerfield by junior second baseman
Will Vogelgesang scored Harrigan. Elvers followed with a groundout to bring home Vogelgesang and make it 5-3.
Meanwhile, after allowing two runs in the first inning, freshman pitcher
Sam Bachman settled down the rest of the way. He went 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while striking out four to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Miami completed scoring in the bottom of the eighth when junior third baseman
Landon Stephens drew a bases loaded walk to force home Williams and make it 6-3.
Freshman pitcher
Tyler Bosma pitched a perfect final three innings to earn his third save of the season.
Williams finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Vogelgesang and Harrigan each had two hits for the RedHawks.
Miami continues its series with Youngstown State over the weekend.
Due to the threat of rain the schedule has been changed. The RedHawks and Penguins will play a single game on Saturday beginning at noon. They will then conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday that also starts at noon.
