Miami Sweeps Wright State Doubleheader

The RedHawks outscored the Raiders by a combined 10-2 runs over the two games.
DAYTON, Ohio – The Miami University softball team (16-12, 1-2 MAC) swept its mid-week doubleheader with Wright State (12-17, 0-3 Horizon) on Tuesday. The RedHawks dominated the first game, shutting out Wright State by a 6-0 margin before winning the second game by a 4-2 margin.
Miami 6, Wright State 0
Courtney Vierstra got the start in the circle for the RedHawks. She pitched the complete game to earn the shutout, striking out a season-high 16 batters. Vierstra only gave up three hits and one walk.
The RedHawks took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Haeley Tran led off the game with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Morgan Lott and stole third. Ashton Slone got Miami onto the scoreboard first with an RBI double that scored Tran. Slone stole third base and scored on an RBI double from Johniann Wahl. Kara Leckinger was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. Lily Wilmot drove home Wahl with a single to give Miami a 3-0 lead. Wilmot advanced to second on the throw that saw Leckinger tagged out at third.
Miami registered at least one hit in each of the second, third and fourth innings but could not extend the lead.
The RedHawks added three runs in the top of the fifth inning to increase the lead to 6-0. Slone and Leckinger each reached base on fielding errors by Wright State, separated by a walk to Wahl, loaded the bases with one out. Jenny Vasquez pinch hit for Mackenzie Moore with two outs and singled to score Slone. Hannah Obrey followed with a single to score two runs.
With her double in the first inning, Wahl became the program's all-time leader in career doubles with 37. Slone led the Miami offense with three hits, two runs and an RBI. Wahl had two hits, one run and one RBI. Tran also had two hits.
Miami 4, Wright State 2
Taylor Rathe started the game in the circle for the RedHawks. She pitched three innings, giving up no earned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out two batters.
Brianna Pratt relieve Rathe in the circle to begin the fourth inning. Pratt finished the game, giving up no runs on no hits and no walks. She struck out six batters.
Slone hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning to give Miami a 1-0 lead.
Wright State scored its first runs on the day in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. A Miami fielding error allowed the first base runner of the inning and a walk put runners on first and second. Both runs were unearned as the single came after the inning would have been over.
The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fifth inning when the RedHawks took the lead back. Moore and Tran singled, sandwiching a walk by Adriana Barlow to load the bases with one out. Slone hit a two-out RBI single that scored Moore and Barlow to take a 3-2 lead for Miami.
Jada Dotson hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to cap scoring at 4-2.
Slone led the Miami offense with two hits, one of which was a home run, and three RBI. Tran had three hits. Dotson hit a home run.
UP AHEAD
Miami resumes conference play next Tuesday with a doubleheader at Bowling Green. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
