Miami Clinches First-Round Bye Despite Loss at Buffalo

The RedHawks are guaranteed a top-four seed in the 2019 MAC Tournament.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Miami University women's basketball team (21-6, 12-4 MAC) lost consecutive games for the first time this season with a 61-86 loss at Buffalo on the Bulls' senior day. The RedHawks did clinch a first-round bye in the MAC Tournament as Kent State lost to Bowling Green.

Buffalo shot 55 percent from the floor for the game, highlighted by a 73.3 percent third quarter. Miami did shoot at least 50 percent in the second and fourth quarter but could not make up the difference. Kristen Levering led the RedHawks with 16 points and seven rebounds.

The Bulls started the game on a 14-1 run and did not look back, holding a double-digit lead for the remainder of the first quarter. After 10 minutes of play, Buffalo had a 24-9 lead.

The RedHawks kept pace with the Bulls' scoring in the second quarter, outscoring Buffalo 22-17 in the second quarter to cut into the Bulls' lead. Four minutes into the quarter, Leah Purvis sunk Miami's first three-pointer of the game and followed it up with a jump shot to cut Miami's deficit to 11 points midway through the second quarter.

After the answer by Buffalo, Levering completed a three-point play with 4:07 remaining in the first half to make it a 23-33 game. Three-pointers by Purvis and Kendall McCoy cut Buffalo's lead down to 39-31 with 1:14 to play in the half. The RedHawks' deficit was 10 points going into the locker room.

The Bulls scored the first five points out of the locker room to open up a 15-point lead within the first minute of the second half before the RedHawks could get on the board. Buffalo's defense held Miami's offense to only three points almost seven minutes of the third quarter while Buffalo's offense scored 24 points. A layup by Kenzie Schmitz made it a 30-point game after 30 minutes as Miami trailed 42-72.

Miami outscored Buffalo 19-14 in the fourth quarter but the deficit was too much to overcome.

The RedHawks finish the regular season at home. On Wednesday, Miami hosts Ohio for the Battle of the Bricks at 7 p.m. The RedHawks conclude the regular season next Saturday when they host Akron for senior day. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
