Collegiate Captures 19th National Title with Dominant Performance

The RedHawks scored a season-best 104.68 to win its first title since 2016.

PLYMOUTH, Mich. – A brilliant free skate earned Miami's collegiate synchronized skating team its 19th national title at the US Synchronized Skating National Championships on Saturday.

The RedHawks performed a clean and fast-paced rendition of its Glam-themed program. MU nailed all the elements and components to perfection for a season-best score of 104.86 to secure its first national title since 2016. Miami compiled a score of 56.81 in the components and a 48.05 in the elements to achieve its breakout score.

"They did exactly what they set out to do and when you do that and get the points, it's a great feeling," head coach Carla DeGirolamo said. "From the very first day, they knew what they wanted to do and everything they did each day in practice was to achieve their goals. They put in the work and today was an extension of what they've done every day."

Miami's senior team also closed out the meet strong, posting a season-best free skate score of 130.59. The Red & White compiled a 66.08 element score and 64.51 in component scoring while posting a clean skate to finish with a combined total of 196.95. That score also represents a season best for the RedHawks as they took fourth in the competition, trailing the Haydenettes (226.37), Skyliners (218.14) and Crystallettes (201.63).

"It was electric," DeGirolamo said of the senior team's performance. "The energy from this morning at practice until they got off the ice tonight was great. They were motivated and determined to put out that skate."

In addition to the bevy of national titles in the mantel of the collegiate program, Miami synchronized skating has captured a total of 22 national championships when combined with the senior team's accolades.
