OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University softball team (6-4) travels to Nashville, Tenn. for a tournament at Lipscomb this weekend. The RedHawks will play a doubleheader on Friday and another doubleheader on Saturday, competing against Appalachian State and Eastern Illinois as well as the home team.
Miami had last weekend off from competition after a pair of long road trips to South Carolina and Nevada. The RedHawks went 4-1 at the UNLV Tournament that took place Friday, February 15 through Sunday, February 17. Miami beat Utah Valley twice in addition to shutting out the host team and beating UC Davis in extra innings.
OPPONENT PREVIEW
Miami's first opponent in Nashville is Appalachian State. The two will face off on Friday, March 1 at 11 a.m. in the first game of the tournament. The Mountaineers are 8-3 and on a seven-game win streak after dropping three games in opening weekend. Appalachian State swept the Holy City Showdown last weekend in Charleston, S.C., beating Dartmouth, College of Charleston, Radford, Iowa State and Marshall. Every game was decided by three or less runs and the combined run total did not exceed five.
The RedHawks second half of Friday's doubleheader is against Eastern Illinois at 1:30 p.m. The Panthers are 3-11 so far this season. Last weekend, Eastern Illinois went 0-5 at the Tiger Invitational, falling to Troy twice in addition to Villanova, Auburn and North Dakota State. EIU played MAC-foe Ohio twice during opening weekend, losing both in close contests.
Miami plays Appalachian State against on Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m. before concluding tournament play with a game against Lipscomb at 1:30 p.m. The Lady Bisons hold an 8-6-1 record after three weeks of play. Last weekend at the Unconquered Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla., Lipscomb split its games right down the middle going 2-2-1.
