OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University baseball team came away with a pair of wins on Friday night to open its home season. The RedHawks began Friday's contest with a 10-2 win and captured the night cap 14-3 over Oakland.
GAME 1
Miami got on board with three runs in the bottom of the second. After freshman designated hitter
Cole Andrews and junior shortstop
Will Vogelgesang were hit by pitches, junior catcher
Cal Elvers tripled to deep center field, scoring both of the runners. One batter later, senior right fielder
Mackay Williams singled through the left side to bring home Elvers and make it 3-0.
The RedHawks made it 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth when junior third baseman
Landon Stephens singled home Williams.
In the bottom of the sixth, Miami loaded the bases with no one out off of singles by Andrews, Vogelgesang and redshirt junior left fielder
Kyle Winkler. Elvers scored Andrews on a sacrifice fly. On the next play, Vogelgesang and Winkler each stole a base. The Golden Grizzlies catcher threw the ball away, allowing Vogelgesang to score and make it 6-0.
The RedHawks broke it open with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Junior first baseman
Charlie Harrigan hit a double that hit the chalk on the right field line, scoring junior second baseman
Colin Shepherd and Stephens. After Oakland recorded a pair of outs, a double by Winkler brought home Harrigan. Elvers then singled to right field to score Winkler and make it 10-0.
Elvers finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and one run scored. Williams and Winkler were each 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Junior pitcher
Spencer Mraz was solid, going 6.0 innings while allow no runs and only two hits. Freshman
Tyler Bosma earned his second save of the season by finishing the final three innings.
Game 2
Landon Stephens got Miami on the board in a hurry with a solo shot in the bottom of the first. Stephens opened the third with a triple and
Charlie Harrigan brought him home with a ground out to second. Miami led 2-0 after three innings of action.
Miami added three more runs in the fifth. Two of the runs came after
Mackay Williams tripled off the right field wall.
With Miami up 7-1 after five innings of play, the RedHawks plated five more in the bottom of the sixth. Williams capped off the scoring with a three run homer to right field.
Bailey Martin picked up his second win of the season, throwing five innings and allowing just one run.
Alex Stobert added two scoreless innings while picking up three strikeouts.
Miami returns to action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the third and final contest versus Oakland.
