AKRON, Ohio – The Miami University women's basketball team (19-4, 10-2 MAC) beat Akron (14-9, 5-7 MAC) by a 67-61 margin on Saturday.
Savannah Kluesner earned her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Lauren Dickerson and
Leah Purvis also scored in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Kenzie Schmitz scored a career-high six points.
Kendall McCoy and Kluesner made the first two baskets of the game for either team to give Miami a 4-0 lead after three minutes of play, a lead it would not relinquish. The teams traded shots before the RedHawks sunk back-to-back baskets midway through the first quarter to extend their lead to 10-4.
Akron responded with two-straight baskets of its own to cut Miami's lead to two points with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter before Miami bumped it back up to a six-point spread. Dickerson got Miami's first steal of the day to give the RedHawks the chance at back-to-back conversions.

The RedHawks went on a 6-0 run, capped by a three-point play from Schmitz with under a minute to play in the first quarter.

Miami had its largest lead of the first quarter, nine points, after the three-point play by Schmitz. Akron scored the last points of the quarter as Miami held a 20-13 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Dickerson and
Baleigh Reid each gave the RedHawks a nine-point lead early in the second quarter before Akron went on a couple runs to close the gap.
Five-straight points for the Zips in the third minute of the second quarter cut Miami's lead to four before Dickerson increased it back to an eight-point spread. Akron responded with another 5-0 run. The RedHawks went into the locker room with a 32-30 lead.
Scoring was 5-4 in favor of the 'Hawks to start the third quarter as Miami held a 37-34 lead after two minutes of play in the second half. The RedHawks scored the next four points to increase their lead to seven with 6:37 remaining in the third quarter before Akron made a layup.
Miami's defense did not allow Akron to score in the final 5:51 of the third quarter and only allowed six points in the third quarter. The RedHawks offense ended the third quarter on a 6-0 run to open up an 11-point lead after 30 minutes of play, leading by a 47-36 margin.
Miami's first basket of the fourth quarter was also its first three-pointer of the day, made by Schmitz.

McCoy also made a three-pointer in the fourth quarter as the RedHawks continued to hold off the Zips' attack in a back-and-forth fourth quarter.

The final minute of play brought a flurry of free throws after a scoring drought for both teams. Dickerson, McCoy and Purvis all made shots from the line to cap scoring at 67-61 as time ran out.
The RedHawks continue road play with a mid-week game at Toledo on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
