DEKALB, Ill. – Kristina DeMarco's goal in the 70th minute helped erase an early deficit while the Miami soccer team fired a season-high 32 shots in a 1-1 tie at Northern Illinois on Sunday.
Sunday's result gives the RedHawks (3-9-1, 2-3-1 Mid-American) a point to keep in the hunt for a spot in the MAC Tournament.
The Huskies (2-9-2, 0-5-1 MAC) drew first blood in the eighth minute when Kelsey Chope netted a goal off a rebound to make it 1-0. NIU at that point fired the first three shots of the day, all of which were on net.
Miami got things started territorially afterwards, ending the half with a 10-5 shot advantage along with taking an 8-2 lead in corner kicks in the opening frame. Despite the wide spread in possession and attempts, Northern Illinois' early goal remained the only one on the board at halftime.
Miami continued to pour on the attack in the second half, outshooting Northern Illinois 16-5 in the final 45 minutes of regulation. Even so, the Huskies lead stood until the 70th minute as DeMarco tallied her first goal of the year on a setup by
Soph Spinell.
The Huskies attempted four shots after the equalizer, but nothing found the back of the net. MU had six more of its own, but the score remained tied after 90 minutes.
Territorial play continued to favor the Red & White in the extra sessions as the RedHawks collectively had a 6-1 shot advantage in the two extra sessions, but settled for a point in the tie.
The RedHawks outshot the Huskies 32-11 for the afternoon and also had a 19-3 advantage in corner kicks. In net,
Izzie Vaccari finished with six saves on seven shots.
Miami returns to action on Friday when it heads to defending MAC Champion Bowling Green.
