Miami placed fifth in its first international competition of the season.
GOTHENBURG, Sweden – Miami's senior synchronized skating team wrapped up the weekend with a bang at the Leon Lurje Trophy on Sunday.
The RedHawks wrapped up the competition with their Tango-themed free skate, which scored at a season-best 122.55, giving them a total final score of 185.19. While that score did finish fifth in the nine-team competition, it was also within a couple points of its season best despite the team competing this weekend for the first time since Nov. 30.
"We were aggressive going out for both programs," head coach Carla DeGirolamo said. "We had a fall that cost us some points last night in the short program, but we battled through it and came out with a great clean free skate. We had a lot more speed and flow and our performance quality was stronger with the adjustments we made. We'll continue making additions in there, but we have a really strong base right now."
Paradise (Russia) claimed gold at the competition with 234.35 points while the Helsinki Rockettes from Finland (225.13) and Haydenettes (213.81) also medaled.
Miami's senior team is off until its next international showing at the Zagreb Snowflakes Trophy in Zagreb, Croatia (Feb. 8-9). However, the collegiate team is back in action at the Midwestern Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Feb. 2.
