Colorado College netted a 5-on-3 goal with 3:22 left to snap a 2-2 tie.
OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami hockey team rallied from an early deficit to snag a lead entering the third period, but Colorado College used a late 5-on-3 to rally for a 3-2 win on Saturday night.
Miami falls to 9-13-4 on the season, 3-9-2-1 in National Collegiate Hockey play.
The Tigers (10-12-3, 4-7-2-0 NCHC) struck on their first shot of the night as Ben Israel was fed high slot for a slap shot that found the net 3:54 into the contest. MU got a power play a couple minutes later, but was unable to get a shot through to Alex Leclerc as the score remained 1-0 with roughly eight minutes gone by.
Miami was forced to kill off a penalty midway through the first, but Jordan Uhelski was up to the task during a scoreless 2 minutes. The Red & White started hemming the Tigers in their zone down the stretch of the opening frame, with Grant Hutton getting a crack in the slot that Alex Leclerc stopped, along with a rebound try by Casey Gilling.
With time winding down in the first, Scott Corbett gathered the puck after Jonathan Gruden tipped it to him in the defensive zone, where he skated up ice down his off wing at the right side and flicked a wrist shot past Leclerc's blocker. Corbett's fourth goal of the year left the score all tied at 1-1 after 20 minutes.
Play went back and forth for large stretches of the second period. Karch Bachman had the first excellent chance of the frame when he drove wide and got to the net for a point blank chance that Leclerc kicked aside. At the other end, the Tigers nearly regained the lead when Trey Bradley skated up ice for a 2-on-1 and fed Troy Conzo on his backhand to the right side, but Jordan Uhelski got across to make the stop and keep it tied.
A CC penalty shortly after the scoring chance allowed MU to go to work on a power play, and Derek Daschke flung a wrist shot from the left point through traffic and in to hand the RedHawks a 2-1 lead with 7:35 to play in the frame. Gilling and Rourke Russell both picked up assists on Daschke's fifth goal of the year. Miami successfully killed off a Colorado College power play shortly after grabbing the lead and took the 2-1 lead into the third period.
The Tigers evened the score just 1:26 into the third as Alex Berardinelli fed Cole McCaskill sneaking in from the right point for a back door play to make it 2-2. CC ended up outshooting MU 10-4 in the final frame, though Miami did get an opportunity with a power play with 7:28 to go in regulation. The Red & White were unable to generate any offense on that man advantage as two minutes went by without a shot.
Shortly after it returned to 5-on-5, Miami was tagged with two penalties 37 seconds apart to give Colorado College a two-man advantage. While MU's three-man unit did some dogged work to keep play out of its zone, CC eventually grabbed the lead on a one-timer from Kristian Blumenschein to grab a 3-2 lead with 3:22 to play.
Miami pulled Uhelski for an extra attacker down the stretch and got a couple good looks in on Leclerc, but was unable to found the tying tally in the end.
The Tigers outshot the RedHawks 34-23 on the night as Uhelski finished with 31 saves while Leclerc turned aside 21 shots. CC finished 1-for-5 on the power play while MU was 1-for-3.
MU returns to action on Friday when it opens a series at first-place St. Cloud State. Opening faceoff is slotted for 8:07 p.m. ET.
