OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University hockey team suffered its second-straight shutout in a 3-0 setback against No. 4/5 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday night.
Miami drops to 9-11-4 (3-7-2-1 National Collegiate Hockey) on the season.
The Bulldogs (14-6-2, 7-4-1-0) went on a pair of early power plays, but the RedHawks were able to kill both off with little trouble. Miami got its first sustained pressure the shift following its first penalty kill as Jonathan Gruden had a good look in the right circle for a one-timer that Hunter Shepard stopped to leave it scoreless. Phil Knies also got a breakaway look that Shepard kept out.
A third UMD power play got it on the board as Scott Perunovich's point shot hit a Miami player and redirected in to stake the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead in a first period where they outshot the RedHawks 13-5.
Miami came out with offensive pressure in the second, recording the first four shots on goal. MU went on a power play 33 seconds into the frame and generated some good looks that Shepard stopped.
A handful of penalties gave the RedHawks a brief 5-on-3 about seven minutes into the second, but a blocked shot created a breakaway chance and a play made on Justin Richards closing in on net led to a penalty shot, which he buried to make it a 2-0 UMD lead with 12:22 remaining in the middle stanza. The RedHawks had some more opportunities in a back and forth period, but were still down a couple after 40 minutes.
Nick Swaney capped the scoring 4:13 into the third after forechecking pressure forced a turnover in the Miami zone.
The Bulldogs outshot the RedHawks 39-17 and went 1-for-5 on the power play while killing off all four RedHawk man advantages. Shepard turned away 17 shots for his second-straight shutout while Jordan Uhelski stopped 36 of 39 shots.
Miami caps off its home stand next weekend when it takes on Colorado College. Friday's series opener starts at 7:35 p.m.
