RedHawks Drop Tight One to Rockets

Miami falls to 0-2 in MAC play.

Box Score OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami soccer team outshot Toledo by a 16-10 margin, but a comeback bid fell just short in a 2-1 setback on Sunday afternoon.

The result drops Miami to 2-6-1 on the year and 0-2 in Mid-American Conference play.

Miami established a strong possession game in the opening frame, outshooting Toledo (5-4-1, 1-1 MAC) by an 8-5 margin. Amidst those bids were several strong chances. Kirsten Fehlan nearly put the Red & White on the board in the 15th minute when she redirected a Jordan King corner kick service towards the goal line, but it was kept out by a Rocket defender right on the line. In the 19th minute, Lyda Bogdanovitch was played in with a lot of grass in front of her, but her 15-yard try from the left side was stopped by Madison Perrin.

Despite the territorial advantage for MU, it was UT that found the net in the first half as a low cross from the left corner was deflected out front, where Elbony Rodriguez finished the play in the 35th minute. Miami still put on pressure as Olivia Winnett tried a close range free kick in the 36th minute that Perrin kept in front of her, leaving the RedHawks trailing by one at the break.

Toledo added to its lead in the 52nd minute when Patricia Koutoulas stopped an initial shot by Ashton Cassel, but the ball caromed off the post and to the other side where Hannah Scafaria cleaned up the rebound to go up 2-0. Miami continued putting on pressure and eventually it paid off in the 74th minute. Olivia Winnett crossed a ball to Bogdanovitch, who scored from the left side to cut the gap to 2-1.

The RedHawks' comeback bid got more difficult in the 79th minute when a foul in the box gave the Rockets a penalty kick. While the ensuing attempt missed the net, the foul led to a red card and put Miami down to 10 players. Miami did generate one more shot attempt in the 83rd minute, but it went off target as Toledo held on.

Miami finished with a 16-10 edge in shots, though Toledo created eight corner kicks to MU's five. Koutoulas and Perrin both finished with five saves apiece.

The RedHawks head out on the road for their next three MAC contests, beginning with a Friday showdown at rival Ohio at 4 p.m.
