Miami Blanks Indiana For Second-Straight Shutout

The RedHawks won by a 5-0 margin.

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University field hockey team shut out Indiana by a 5-0 margin on Sunday to earn back-to-back shutouts this weekend. The RedHawks improve to 7-4 on the season while the Hoosiers drop to 2-7.

Miami earned the first penalty corner of the game just three minutes into play but was not able to get a shot off.

While the RedHawks controlled possession for much of the first half, the first shot of the game for either team came during the 18th minute of play when Portugal's shot sailed wide.

Portugal immediately got the ball back and put in the game-winning goal before the 19-minute mark. Portugal took the ball into the middle of the circle, directly in front of the goalkeeper, and scored her 10th of the season to give Miami a lead it would not relinquish.

In the 27th minute, Leonor Berlie increased Miami's lead to 2-0 with her third goal of the year. Berlie scored by taking the ball from an Indiana defender in the circle and immediately putting it past the goalkeeper.

With less than three minutes remaining in the first half, Indiana was rewarded a penalty stroke. Maddie Passarella made a huge save to allow Miami to carry the 2-0 lead into the half.

In the first half, the RedHawks did not give up a penalty corner and led in shots 4-1.

In the 42nd minute, Indiana earned its only penalty corner of the game. Mariona Heras recorded a defensive save on the resulting shot to keep Indiana off of the scoreboard. Miami would hold Indiana shot-less for the remainder of the game.

Just three minutes later, Sturm would pass the ball to Kenzie Peterson right in front of the goalkeeper for Peterson's second goal of the season.

Following a short stop on the field due to an injury, Indiana replaced its goalkeeper.

During the 51st minute of play, Miami earned another penalty corner. Portugal scored her second of the game and 11th of the season on an indirect play, shooting the ball with her backhand to the goalkeeper's right.

With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Rosie Kalis replaced Passarella in the 'Hawks net. Kalis and Passarella share today's shutout.

In the final 15 seconds of the game, Berlie fed Portugal a pass in the center of the circle to complete Portugal's hat trick. This was Portugal's 12th goal of the season.

Miami led the game in shots 8-2, shots on goal 7-2 and penalty corners 6-1. Portugal led both teams with four shots.

The RedHawks resume conference play with a game at Central Michigan on Friday at 4 p.m.
