OXFORD, Ohio – Bowling Green scored 1:50 into the contest to put the Miami soccer team in an early hole it couldn't recover from in a 2-0 setback on Friday.
The result drops the RedHawks to 2-5-1 as they drop their Mid-American Conference opener.
A foul just outside the box allowed Bowling Green (3-3-2, 1-0 MAC) to get on the board just 1:50 into the contest as Chelsee Washington buried a free kick from 19 yards out to make it a 1-0 contest. The Falcons put up a 10-2 shot advantage in the first half, holding the ball in their attacking third for a good chunk of the frame.
Lyda Bogdanovitch had the Red & White's best opportunity in the 17th minute when she won a footrace with BGSU keeper Kathleen Duwve to a loose ball 23 yards out, but her attempted chip over went right into Duwve to keep it a one-score deficit. Despite the heavy deficit in shots, MU went into the break with the Washington goal as the only mark at halftime.
The RedHawks had a brief surge early in the second half as
Bianca Medancic nearly tied it up in the 49th minute when she beat a defender entering the box and fired a hard left-footed shot that went a hair wide of the left post. Bowling Green did still have the bulk of the opportunities, owning an 8-5 shot advantage and getting an insurance goal from Nikki Cox when she converted a second touch off a corner kick in the 71st minute to cap the scoring.
BGSU outshot MU 18-7 on the afternoon as Koutoulas made six saves on eight shots while Duwve made one save for the shutout.
Miami wraps up its MAC opening weekend by hosting Toledo on Sunday. Opening kick is at 1 p.m.
