Miami Falls to California to Conclude West Coast Trip

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Miami University field hockey team fell to California by a 1-0 margin on Sunday. The RedHawks drop to a 3-2 record on the season while the Golden Bears improve to a 2-1 record.

"I believe that we were able to control the game for most of the first and second half," said Maddie Passarella. "During the second half we really picked up our press and started playing more with each other. I believe we fought hard for this game and it was a tough finish. From here as a team we are finding the takeaways from this game."

The majority of the first half was played at midfield where the teams battled for possession. This was reflected on the scoreboard as the game was scoreless at the half with each team earning two penalty corners and taking two shots.

Miami came out strong in the second half, running down the field to earn a penalty corner less than two minutes in and firing off a couple of shots.

The RedHawks started to gain possession and spend some time inside of California's 25 around the 46th minute of play. After another penalty corner chance and a wide shot, California called timeout to regroup.

After the timeout, California made a push, earning a pair of penalty corners before Miami could regain control and create its own push.

With just under 11 minutes to play, the Golden Bears stole the ball from the RedHawks' offense and sent a long pass up the field. Passarella stopped the initial shot before California scored on the rebound.

Miami created pressure but the California defense prevented any more dangerous chances.

The RedHawks led the game in shots (9-6) and corners (5-4). Passarella recorded two saves. Paula Portugal led both teams with five shots, three of them on goal.

Miami plays at No. 12 Northwestern on Friday at 1 p.m. ET.
