Rick McVey ’81, Jim Rohr ’68 have deep connections to Miami Athletics
Golf was a very important part of Rick McVey's Miami Experience.
The same holds true, in a different manner, for Jim Rohr '68.
Both are giving back to Miami Golf with separate scholarship endowments – McVey with his second Richard McVey Golf Scholarship and Rohr with the James and Charleen Rohr Golf Scholarship. With these leadership gifts, along with gifts from several others, the scholarships for the golf program are now fully-endowed.
"It is through the generosity of donors like Rick and Jim, we are able to provide significant resources to the student-athletes of our golf program," said David Sayler, Miami's director of athletics. "Scholarships are the backbone of college athletics and to have the golf program fully endowed allows us to elevate our golf program and our mission of Graduating Champions!"
McVey '81 was co-captain for the Red and White during the program's Mid-American Conference championship season of 1981.
"It was a special part of the college experience to be able to compete alongside my teammates," McVey said. "That team went on to do some great things on and off the golf course. We had a terrific group of guys at that time."
After graduating with a degree in finance from Miami, McVey earned his MBA from Indiana University. He founded MarketAxess, a leading electronic platform for corporate bonds, in 2000 and has been the chairman and CEO since inception. Â
McVey is also a member of the Miami University Foundation Board.
"I just had a fantastic four-year experience at Miami," McVey said. "I want to stay connected with the university and find ways to give back and help current students. I talk passionately with people and tell them that Miami is a very special place."
While he was not part of Miami's golf team, Rohr has his own deep roots to the university's athletic programs. He was a member of Miami's basketball team, and his father, William Rohr, coached that program from 1951-1957.
Still, Rohr has his own Miami golf story. A class taught by former Red and White golf coach Rodger Cromer inspired Rohr's love for the game that continues to this day.
"I really didn't start playing golf until I was at Miami," Rohr said. "I've just been close to that program really ever since. Golf was kind of a thing you could play forever. I still play quite a bit today."
Rohr earned a B.S. in business from Miami before obtaining a master's in sports studies from Ohio University and a doctorate in educational administration from Bowling Green. He later founded Indian Ridge Golf Club in Oxford.
"I have a deep sense of loyalty to Miami University," Rohr said. "I just feel like I've been blessed to have attended Miami and been a part of such a fine institution. That was part of the motivation for wanting to give back and making sure others can enjoy the same benefits in the future. We're happy to do it. We hope we play a small part in their ongoing success."
Both Miamians have helped in other areas, McVey through scholarships for the Farmer School of Business and Rohr with scholarships for the basketball program.
"Scholarships are the lifeblood of any athletics program because they allow you to recruit the very best student-athletes," said Zac Zedrick, Miami golf coach. "At Miami, offering a young man a scholarship to play golf means we are providing him with support toward earning one of the most respected undergraduate degrees in the world. To be able to endow that opportunity lays the foundation for consistent and long-term success at the highest level of NCAA Division I golf."
The second Richard McVey Golf Scholarship and the James and Charleen Rohr Golf Scholarship are part of Miami's mission of Graduating Champions. This mission focuses on providing guidance and support to Miami students committed to their unyielding pursuit of academic and athletic excellence.
