The RedHawks and Blue Hens were tied 1-1 at the half.
OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University field hockey team fell to the No. 9 Delaware Blue Hens by a 4-1 margin on Sunday. The RedHawks fall to 1-1 on the season while the Blue Hens improve to 2-0.
"The effort was good, but not good enough," said head coach Iñako Puzo. "I think we played very good for about 55 to 60 minutes and then we ran out of gas."
The game was deadlocked at zero for the first 26 minutes of play as the teams traded offensive chances. Delaware got onto the scoreboard first with a rebound shot on a penalty corner chance.
Less than two minutes later, Miami tied the game. Senior Estel Roig tipped in a shot from red-shirt senior Mariona Heras on a penalty corner opportunity for her first goal of the season.
The teams took the 1-1 tie into the second half of play. The Blue Hens had the slight 6-5 edge in shots during the first half, while each team earned four penalty corners.
Both teams increased the physicality in their play during the second half with each team being awarded two yellow cards and Delaware picking up a green card as well.
The Blue Hens broke the tie in the 52nd minute of play with a tipped shot on a penalty corner.
Delaware scored twice in the final eight minutes of the game to ensure a win.
Senior goalkeeper Maddie Passarella recorded five saves. Miami totaled eight shots and five penalty corners.
The RedHawks travel to California for three games this week. Miami plays at Pacific on Thursday at 6 p.m. EST.
