Indiana struck for three first half goals to top Miami.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A three-goal first half dug the Miami soccer team into a hole it couldn't get out of in a 3-0 setback at Indiana at the Hoosier Challenge Cup on Sunday afternoon.
MU drops to 0-2 on an opening weekend that saw it clash with a pair of Big Ten foes.
The Hoosiers (1-0) outshot the RedHawks by an 11-3 margin while taking all three corner kicks in the first half. IU connected for three goals in the opening frame, drawing first blood in the 20th minute as Annelie Leitner converted a crossing feed. Abby Allen extended Indiana's lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute while Grace Geise capped the first half scoring in the 38th minute by scoring off a corner kick.
Miami got a few more scoring opportunities in the second half, but was unable to crack the Indiana net as IU kept the gap at three throughout to pick up the win.
Overall shots were 17-7 in favor of the Hoosiers while Indiana also enjoyed a 7-1 corner kick advantage. Patricia Koutoulas made five saves for the Red and White while Bethany Kopel turned aside all four shots she faced.
Miami returns to the pitch on Sunday when it finishes a season-opening three-match road stretch at Western Kentucky. Opening kick is at 1 p.m.
