The former assistant coach for the hockey team will have his day with the Stanley Cup in Oxford.
OXFORD, Ohio – After achieving success at the highest level of hockey, former Miami hockey assistant coach and Stanley Cup champion Mitch Korn is bringing Lord Stanley back to where it all began. Korn's day with the Stanley Cup takes place in Oxford on Wednesday, Sept. 5.
Korn wished for his day with the Stanley Cup, awarded to each member of the Stanley Cup champion, to be at Miami. While his itinerary for Sept. 5 is packed, a public viewing of the cup will be held at the Goggin Ice Center during the day, courtesy of Korn.
Korn, who was Miami's goaltending coach from 1981-88, served as the Washington Capitals' director of goaltending during their 2017-18 championship run. While at Miami University, he notably developed goaltender Alain Chevrier into becoming the first Miami player to reach the NHL. He also served as a night manager and eventually the Director of Goggin Ice Arena while down the road playing a vital role in the 2007 opening of Steve 'Coach' Cady Arena, the current home of the RedHawks.
Korn's NHL exploits as a legendary goaltending coach are endless. While serving as goaltending coach with the Buffalo Sabres in the 90s, he turned Dominik Hasek into a four-time Vezina Trophy winner for the league's top goaltender, with a pair of Hart Trophies (NHL MVP) to boot. He also helped Braden Holtby capture a Vezina Trophy shortly in his second year as goaltender coach for the Washington Capitals. Korn also served a stint as goaltending coach with the Nashville Predators and his traveling goaltending camp, Mitch Korn's Goalie School, is regarded as one of the top goaltending camps in the world.
In addition to Korn, John Walton, another child of Oxford who covered the Capitals' title run is expected to return to Oxford for the festivities. Walton serves as Washington's radio broadcaster and he honed his skills during his undergraduate at Miami University. He served as sports director of Miami's student radio station, WMSR and graduated from MU with a degree in Mass Communications in 1996.
While the finalized schedule of the Stanley Cup's public viewing is not yet available, the viewing will be held in the lobby of the Goggin Ice Center. Further details will be available on MiamiRedHawks.com as Mitch Korn's day with the Stanley Cup draws closer.
