DALLAS – Incoming Miami hockey freshman Jonathan Gruden concluded a busy weekend by hearing his name called at the NHL Draft on Saturday.
Gruden was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the fourth round (95th overall), making him the 63rd Miami player to be drafted and the 31st since the 2001 draft.
A native of Rochester Hills, Mich., Gruden played his junior hockey with the USA National Team Development Program for the past two seasons. With the Under-18 team this past season, Gruden notched 60 points (28 goals, 32 assists) in 61 games and also served as an alternate captain for Team USA during the U18 World Junior Championships, where he dished out four assists in seven games.
Earlier this month, Gruden was one of 42 players added to USA Hockey’s initial roster for the 2018 World Junior Showcase, which runs from July 28-Aug. 4 in Kamloops, B.C. He’ll vie for a spot on Team USA’s World Junior Championship roster.
Gruden comes to Miami with family NHL ties as well, with his father John Gruden, skated in 92 NHL games with the Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals.
