OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami baseball team held off a late Bowling Green rally to pick up an 8-5 victory and their third Mid-American Conference series win in as many chances Sunday.
The RedHawks (17-10, 6-3 MAC) got multi-hit performances from Landon Stephens (2-for-4, 3 RBI), Parker Massman (2-for-2, 1 RBI) and Will Vogelgesang (2-for-4). Vogelgesang also scored twice while Dallas Hall (1-for-3) crossed home plate three times and drove in two runs.
Miami took the first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the third. Hall started off the inning by earning a walk and Ross Haffey reached on an error. Stephens then drove in Hall with a single through the left side.
The Red & White broke the game open with a little help from the Falcons in the bottom of the fifth. Massman started the frame with a single and advanced to second on wild pitch. Mackay Williams then reached on a walk before a bunt single by Vogelgesang had the bases loaded with nobody out. A failed sacrifice bunt erased Massman at the plate but kept the bases juiced with one down. Grant Hartwig earned an RBI the hard way as he was hit by a pitch, allowing Williams to trot home and score. Hall then drew a walk to bring in another run. After a strikeout, Stephens and Senger earned back-to-back walks to plate two more tallies. Massman, who began the inning, drove in the fifth and final run of the frame with a single to left that scored Hall. The big inning had the `Hawks in front 6-0.
The next three frames were all Bowling Green. In the top of the fifth, a one-run triple and a one-run single cut the MU lead to 6-2. A one-run single in the sixth couple with another run-scoring single and an RBI groundout in the seventh quickly had the RedHawks' lead narrowed to 6-5.
While the Falcons would threaten and get the tying run within 90 feet, the Red & White were able to seal the win in the bottom of the eighth. Vogelgesang led off with another bunt single and was moved to second courtesy of a Adrian Texidor sacrifice bunt. Following an out, Hall doubled down the line in left to bring in Vogelgesang. Haffey got on via a walk before Hall was driven in on a Stephens single to center.
The two-run ninth gave Miami an 8-5 advantage entering the ninth, where Shane Smith kept the Falcons at bay to seal the victory. Smith tossed a scoreless final three innings and picked up his first save of the season in the process. Starting pitcher Gus Graham picked up the win, improving his record to 2-0 on the year. The senior went 5.2 innings and surrendered three runs on six hits while fanning three Falcons.
Miami gets right back at it as it gets set to host the Joe Nuxhall Classic this Tuesday and Wednesday. The RedHawks take on Xavier Tuesday at 6 p.m. Miami will also play at 6 p.m. on Wednesday against either Cincinnati or Wright State, pending the results of Tuesday's contests.
