OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami baseball team faltered late as Bowling Green rallied for a 10-9 win on Saturday at McKie Field at Hayden Park. Down by two entering the top of the ninth, the Falcons scored three runs in the inning to pull in front before holding on for the victory.
The defeat drops the Red & White's record to 16-10 (5-3 MAC) while BG moved to 9-20 (4-4 MAC).
The Falcons grab the game's first lead in the top of the third when a ground ball double play with no one out allowed a runner to score from third. However, the BG margin was short-lived as the RedHawks fired back with four runs in the home half of the frame. Kyle Winkler and Dallas Hall led off the inning by earning a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively. Ross Haffey followed by singling up the middle and reached second on the throw attempt home, one that was late, as Winkler scored. Landon Stephens followed with a run-scoring base hit of his own as Hall touched home to give MU the lead. Hayden Senger kept things going with a sacrifice fly to right and Parker Massman capped the frame's scoring with a double down the left field line that brought in Stephens. The RedHawks held a 4-1 lead through three.
Miami added a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth to extend their margin to 6-1. Winkler reached safely on a one-out error, stole second and reached third on a Hall base hit to left. Following the second out of the inning, Stephens singled through the left side, bringing in both Winkler and Hall to push the Red & White lead to five runs.
Bowling Green promptly answered in the top of the fifth, cutting the MU lead to 6-3 on a pair of RBI singles. The RedHawks would scratch across a single run in the bottom half of the inning. Massman got on via a one-out walk and was moved to second thanks to a Cal Elvers sacrifice bunt. After a Will Vogelgesang bunt single, Adrian Texidor singled to the hole on the left side of the infield, allowing Massman to score from third and make the score 7-3 Miami.
The Falcons pulled even in the top of the sixth as their offense came to life. A one-run double, a one-run single, a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly plated four runs for BG and knotted the score at 7-all.
The RedHawks retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Winkler and Hall both walked to start the inning. Following two quick outs, Senger walked to load the bases. Massman then delivered with a two-run single to right to move Miami in front, 9-7.
BG took advantage of three RedHawk walks with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth to grab a 10-9 lead and escaped with a win to force a rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m.
