
Miami Drops EMU Series Opener

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Miami University softball team lost its series opener at Eastern Michigan by a 6-4 margin. Miami drops to 13-16 overall this season and 2-5 in conference play.

Courtney Vierstra pitched a complete game for the RedHawks, giving up five earned runs and nine hits while striking out nine batters.
Haeley Tran and Ashton Slone each singled in the first inning but were stranded on base.
Rylee Whispel walked in the second inning, followed by a single from Morgan Lott. With two outs, Megan Wurts hit a three-run home run to give Miami a 3-0 lead. This is Wurts' third home run of the season.
Miami increased its lead to 4-0 in the third inning on a solo shot from Kaitlyn Gliha.
In the top of the fourth, Mackenzie Moore led off with a single and stole second.
Eastern Michigan cut Miami's lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth. The lead-off batter reached base on error and was immediately followed by a home run.
The game was tied at four runs in the bottom of the fifth off of a double and two singles.
Moore hit another single in the sixth and reached third on an Eastern Michigan fielding error. She was stranded at third.
In the top of the seventh, Slone singled and Johniann Wahl walked. A double play ended Miami's scoring threat.
A two-run walk-off home run ended the game in the bottom of seven.
Wurts and Gliha led the RedHawks with a home run apiece. Slone and Moore each recorded a multi-hit game with two singles apiece.

Miami wraps up its series at Eastern Michigan with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
