OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami baseball team dropped its series opener against Ohio, 4-3, Friday evening at McKie Field at Hayden Park.
The loss drops the Red & White to 23-15 (9-7 MAC) on the season while the Bobcats move to 20-21 (8-8 MAC).
Ohio got an early 1-0 lead with a leadoff double followed by a one-out RBI single in the top of the first.
The RedHawks were able to answer back in the home half of the third. Ross Haffey and Hayden Senger led off the frame with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners, setting up a Landon Stephens RBI single to left. After a fielder's choice that put Miami runners on the corners again, Mackay Williams laid down a perfect bunt down the first base line that went for a single and allowed Senger to touch home safely. Parker Massman then stole third to set up a Will Vogelgesang safety squeeze, pushing across the third tally of the inning to give Miami a 3-1 advantage through three.
Ohio cut the MU lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth with an RBI groundout. Then, in the top of the seventh, a ball caught up in heavy winds dropped in for a two-run triple, putting the Bobcats ahead for good at 4-3.
RedHawk starting pitcher Spencer Mraz went 6.1 innings and was tagged with all four OU runs while surrendering five hits and striking out four. He took the loss as well to fall to 4-2 on the season. Shane Smith tossed the final 2.2 innings and allowed just two hits while fanning two.
The series continues Saturday at 4 p.m.
