Miami Falls to Akron

AKRON, Ohio - The Miami University softball team fell to Akron in game one of the three-game series on Friday by a 7-3 margin. Miami moves to 20-22 on the season and 7-11 in conference play.

Courtney Vierstra started the game in the circle for the RedHawks. Vierstra gave up five runs (three earned) over 2.1 innings pitched and only walked one. Taylor Rathe replaced Vierstra in the bottom of the third inning with one out and finished the game. Rathe gave up two runs in 3.2 innings and struck out one batter.
Akron struck first putting up a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning. The leadoff batter reached on error. Then a single and a pair of sacrifice plays drove the runs in.
Haeley Tran got the RedHawks' first hit of the game during the second inning. Tran and Megan Wurts, who reached base on an error and stole second, were stranded to end the inning.
The Zips extended their lead in the third inning on a walk and a pair of doubles before Rathe came to the circle. Akron kept scoring with a home run and two singles to bring the score to 6-0.
Miami fired back, scoring two runs in the fourth to make it a 6-2 ball game. Kat Lee hit a single with one out and advanced to third on a fielding error. Lizzie Bollinger brought Lee around on a single and also advanced to third on a fielding error. Kaitlyn Gliha reached base on a fielder's choice that saw Bollinger tagged out at the plate. Morgan Lott hit a two-out double to score Gliha. Kara Leckinger pinch hit for Mackenzie Moore and was walked, but the inning ended without further damage.
Akron brought the score to 7-2 in the bottom of four on a solo home run.
The RedHawks added one more run to the scoreboard in the sixth to make it a 7-3 game. Bollinger, Lott and Moore all singled with Moore picking up the RBI.
Lott (2-for-3, RBI), Bollinger (2-for-3, RBI) and Tran (2-for-4) led the Miami offense.

The RedHawks and Zips close the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
