Miami Drops Doubleheader at CMU

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - The Miami University softball team lost its doubleheader against Central Michigan on Friday. Miami was edged out in the first game by a 3-2 margin. In the second game, the RedHawks lost 5-0.

Courtney Vierstra pitched another complete game for the RedHawks, giving up three runs and no walks and striking out two batters over the course of her six innings pitched.
Megan Wurts opened the game with a double but was left on base in the top of the first.
In the second, Ashton Slone led off with a single and Kaitlyn Gliha reached base on error. Rylee Whispel advanced both Slone and Gliha with a sacrifice bunt, but they were stranded on second and third.
Central Michigan opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a single and triple that drove one run in.
Johniann Wahl tied the game at one run apiece with a solo shot in the fourth inning, her fifth home run of the season and 23rd of her career.
Central Michigan regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with two tallies on a double and two singles.
Slone homered in the top of the seventh, her third of the season. This brought the score to 3-2 in favor of Central Michigan. Gliha singled but was out as part of a double play.

Shannon Hohman started in the circle for the RedHawks. Hohman pitched two and a third innings before being replaced by Taylor Rathe. Hohman allowed four runs, three of them earned. She also registered two strikeouts and one intentional walk. Rathe pitched the remaining three and two thirds innings without giving up an earned run.
Wurts opened the game with a single but was caught stealing.
Gliha walked in the second inning but was stranded on base.
In the third inning, Hohman led off with a single - her first hit of the season. Morgan Lott reached base on a Central Michigan fielding error. Both were left on base to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third, Central Michigan took a 4-0 lead. The lead-off batter reached base on error and stole second. Hohman intentionally walked a batter, who also stole a base. With runners on second and third and one out, Central Michigan hit a single to score one. The Chippewas would hit another single and a double before Rathe replaced Hohman. A sacrifice fly and a fly out would end the inning.
Central Michigan scored its fifth run in the bottom of the fifth. A lead-off single followed by a single with a throwing error allowed a run to score.
Miami threatened again with Slone and Wahl getting walked in the top of the sixth, but could not score.

Miami and Central Michigan wrap up the series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game.
