DEKALB, Ill. -- The Miami University women's tennis team put an exclamation point on the opening weekend of Mid-American Conference play Sunday with a big 6-1 win over Northern Illinois. The `Hawks improve to 6-7 on the season and are 2-0 in the MAC.
For the second straight match, the doubles point belonged to the Red and White. Senior duo Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina combined to win at first singles, while junior Emily Struble and freshman Melati Devi won on the third court to seal the early 1-0 advantage.
The day's singles matches featured pure domination from the RedHawks. As she has done much of the season, Ponomareva set the tone at the top of the lineup with a 7-5, 6-3 win. Struble put on an impressive performance of her own, blitzing past NIU's Abigail Dekkinga 6-1, 6-3 at third singles and freshman Priyana Kalita also won in two sets, 6-1, 7-5. Freshman Milana Lysova pulled through with a 7-6, 6-4 victory on the second court and fellow first-year player Lena Babunski rounded out the Miami winners with a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Lara Slisko.
