YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Miami baseball team clinched a series win over Eastern Michigan with a 3-1 victory on Saturday at Oestrike Stadium. The triumph handed the `Hawks their first series win on the opening weekend of Mid-American Conference play since 2015.
Neither side cracked the scoreboard over the first three frames but Miami finally broke through in the fourth. Cal Elvers ripped a one-out double to left, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on a Ross Haffey single.
The Red & White got the lead to 3-0 in the fifth on a pair of tallies. Dallas Hall led off by reaching on a hit by pitch and got moved to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Will Vogelgesang. After Adrian Texidor drew a walk, Kyle Winkler went the other way for a two-run double.
EMU's lone run came in the eighth on a sacrifice fly. Miami starting pitcher Zach Spears went seven innings strong, surrendering zero runs and just five hits while striking out six. Grant Hartwig and Andy Almquist each tossed an inning in relief with the latter recording his fifth save of the season and his second in as many days.
The RedHawks go for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.
